Overview of Space Launch Systems Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Requirements for the Primary Stages

Jim Engel,

Nondestructive Evaluation Engineer - Boeing Research and Technology

Abstract:
The Space Launch System (SLS) program is a new manned Space Shuttle derived heavy launch vehicle designed for travel to low earth orbit (LEO) followed by lunar and interplanetary missions. The initial “70-t” vehicle will stand 321 feet high and weigh 5.5 million lbs with a payload capacity of 154,000 lbs. This vehicle will be followed with the production of a “130-t” configuration that will be 384 feet high weighing 6.5 million lbs with a payload capacity of 286,000 lbs and will be larger than the Saturn V rockets used on the Apollo program. The SLS vehicle utilizes advanced manufacturing processes and is being designed at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and produced at the Michoud Assembly Facility. This presentation will provide an overview of the rocket along with discussions on the nondestructive testing (NDT) development & planning activities.
Bio:
Jim Engel is a Nondestructive Evaluation Engineer with Boeing Research & Technology in Huntington Beach, CA. Mr. Engel has over 35 years of diversified experience in the NDE field in the Space, Missile, Aircraft, Energy and Construction industries. He has worked extensively with the development of new NDE methods for a variety of materials including composites, thermal protection systems, metals and welding processes. He was the lead project Engineer for the initial development of phased array ultrasonic systems that are commonly used for friction stir welding NDE. Mr. Engel received a M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California; B.S. in Engineering Technology from St. Cloud State University; and an A.A.S. in Nondestructive Testing Technology from Hutchinson/Ridgewater Technical College. He is a Fellow with the American Society for Nondestructive Testing and a member of the ASTM E07 Committee for the development of NDT Standards.
